Process: directing a collapse

Destruction sounds like something you unleash, but in production it's something you choreograph. The piece began with a storyboard of exactly three beats (the first fracture, the cascade, and the moment of stillness after), because a simulation without narrative beats is just physics footage. The monolith itself was modelled with its failure in mind: internal density variations and pre-weakened seams were sculpted into the geometry so the fracture pattern would follow compositional lines rather than random ones.

The simulation ran through more than forty cached iterations at quarter resolution before a single full-quality frame was rendered. Each iteration adjusted one variable: fragment mass, constraint glue strength, gravity ramp timing. The keepers were the takes where the collapse read as reluctant, as if the structure were resisting its own end. That reluctance is where the emotion lives; a building that simply falls is an event, but a building that fights is a character.

Craft decisions that shaped the result

Two decisions defined the final look. First, the camera never moves during the collapse itself, so all the kinetic energy belongs to the subject, which makes the destruction feel documented rather than staged. Second, dust and debris were simulated in a separate pass and dialled back to roughly half of physical accuracy: full realism buried the elegant fracture lines under noise, and the piece is ultimately about those lines.

Rendering happened overnight on a single workstation across four nights, which imposed its own discipline: every frame range was test-rendered at low samples first, and the light rig was locked before simulation caching began. Constraint breeds efficiency; the limitation of one machine produced a cleaner pipeline than an unlimited farm would have.

Where it landed

The finished loop became the opening piece of this portfolio and the most-viewed video across my social channels, out-performing my static posts by roughly the +40% engagement margin that CGI work consistently earns. More durably, the reusable fracture-and-cache setup built for this film has since accelerated every destruction brief that followed it.
